What makes the difference in life are values, the sense of what is right, truth, honesty, family unity and the temper and forging of human beings -- said Calderon -- and those values are what distinguish the Rice family.

“These values I speak to you of are what make the difference between honest work and the road to easy money, corruption, fraud, illegality; all ailments that have overwhelmed Mexico and have crippled the development of national talent.  There is no other path leading to the realization of human beings than that of service to others, like the Rice family has done, with an even keel against adversity,” he said.

During his speech, President Calderon acknowledged the importance that Grupo Rice has had in the  shipbuilding industry in Mexico.

In his message to over 750 guests, among them workers, shareholders, ex-collaborators and authorities, Calderon expressed that today, more than ever, we need to re-design the shipbuilding industry with support from the Government, but also with more private industry participation.

Also, products and industrial processes have to be improved to stay ahead in a competitive world, and commented how the Rice businesses, with their competitive performance and quality of their products have won international recognition.

Calderon upon his arrival.

“Nowadays, they provide nozzles and propeller repair to the U.S. Marine Coastguard. A strong shipbuilding industry is essential in the vision of a winning and modern Mexico that we want to build,” he commented.

“It isn't easy to imagine Mr. Maximino Rice - he evoked - producing supplies for the shipbuilding industry during that complicated era in our country. But with his teachings he left the clear message that the way man reaches realization is through service to others, loyalty and congruence.”

“It is highly gratifying to witness, through the decades, a visualized, very specific enterprise, invisible to all that are unfamiliar with the sea, but specially invisible due to the fact that it specializes in those key parts of the shipbuilding industry that are literally under water, far from everyone's view, but without which one could not even begin to understand how boats move,” said Calderon.

“There is no other path leading to the realization of human beings than that of service to others, like the Rice family has done, with an even keel against adversity.”

“Under these circumstances, we're reaching the age of 100 years, strengthened and as leaders in our field at an international level, not only for the quality of our work, but for the development of our own technology, and as such, we're ready to stay around for another 100 years.”

Likewise, Jose Luis Rice dedicated a few words to his guests, where he stated: “All those of us who are present, celebrating a century of industrial activity, one hundred years of business permanence that, in one way or another, have taken part in this endeavor, should be very proud, not only of belonging to this great family, but because of our collective efforts and coordination, we have managed to resolve every situation, all kinds, that have come-up during such a long work period.”

“But not only have we managed to stay together in an enterprise that began 100 years ago, but during this time, we've accumulated knowledge, strategies, experience and maturity, our own technology, teamwork and the belief that we must do things only once, but well done,” he said.

“Under these circumstances, we're reaching the age of 100 years, strengthened, and as leaders in our field at an international level, not only for the quality of our work, but for the development of our own technology, and as such, we're ready to stay around for another 100 years,” he added, as his closing statement.
